We are leaving the Lot (and our friends) to explore Aveyron. Our first stop of the day was Conques which totally charmed us. Ranked on the list of the most beautiful villages in France, it truly deserves it. We spent a few hours walking around and taking lots of pictures; you will have three posts on this village.
One of the must-sees is Ste-Foy Abbey, whose construction began in the 11th century to end in the 12th. The octagonal bell tower, however, dates from the 19th century. Of Romanesque style, this abbey is remarkable. Its tympanum, in an exemplary state of conservation, dates from the 12th century; it is absolutely fascinating. Several carved decorations also arouse interest when you go around the Abbey. What remains of the cloister with its carved pillars attract attention as well as the Chapel of the Rosary.
Tomorrow we will show you the interior of the Abbey.

To my shame, I had never heard of Conques before — but oh, what a discovery! Thank you so much for this beautiful and highly informative virtual tour, Suzanne and Pierre. It’s a real privilege to explore these little-known places through your eyes.

Thanks Heidi. Nothing to be ashamed of as there are quite a lot of this type of beautiful villages in France; one can’t know about all of them. I didn’t know anything about Conques until we started reading about the region. But as we read, it became obvious that it was a place not to miss. More tomorrow and Wednesday on Conques.
