It’s a good day hike that awaits us in the Freycinet National Park. First, a steep climb to a lookout overlooking Wineglass Bay, probably Tasmania’s most famous beach with its perfect crescent surrounded by the hills of the peninsula. From the lookout, the trail descends, also abruptly, through a typical Tasmanian forest (populated with eucalyptus) to reach the beach. You have to work hard to get to the beach, but it is really worth it!
From Wineglass Bay, you can take the same path (ascent and descent) to return to the parking lot, or cross the Isthmus of the peninsula to reach another beach and walk on the hillside. A longer hike in distance, but a little less grueling. This is the option we chose and that proved to be the best choice.
At the end of the day, en route to Bicheno, we stopped at Sleepy Bay, Cape Tourville and Coles Bay to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Freycinet National Park a little bit longer.

Well done!😀
Thanks for your note. Glad you enjoyed this series.
That view of Wineglass from above is spectacular. I am taken by the variety of the vegetation, the whiteness of the sand and the overall lushness of the landscape. I am glad you took that hike up those stairs and not me! Thanks for doing that.
Thanks Jacqui. I am glad our efforts paid off for you!
Fabulous photos – and such water! You’ve been many places, how do these beaches rank compared to other places you have been?
Thanks Eliza. I would say that they are among the most beautiful beaches we have seen. The sand was very fine and the water colour was just amazing. Though in Tasmania, the water was a tad too cold for comfortable swimming. Pierre did go in but I just dipped in my toes!
I’d love to smell the sea air. Love the photos.
Thanks Sherry. Glad you enjoyed this series… though we can’t include the smell of the sea air!
Beautiful photos! We had a couple of holidays in Tasmania well over 20 years ago now when both our girls were small. We stayed at Bicheno for a few days on one of our trips – such a tranquil place. Our girls loved seeing the fairy penguins! We did try to go to Wineglass Bay but the path was steep and our youngest not inclined to walk up there so Monsieur took our eldest up to see the view but didn’t go down to the beach. The water is very cold in Tasmania – I remember trying to paddle in January (the hottest month) and my feet nearly froze! Still it’s an enchanting part of the world 🙂
Thanks Rosemary. Glad this post brought back nice memories for you. It was indeed a very steep climb and then a steep descent so I can understand why you didn’t go. The water is indeed quite cool in Tasmania though Pierre managed to swim briefly a few times…
That was brave of him as the water is very cold from memory!
The water wasn’t too bad for Pierre but very much too cold for me… He so much like to swim that he can tolerate colder water than me.
