We recently spent 3 weeks in Guadeloupe (from March 20 to April 10) and we were charmed by these islands with their very diverse landscapes. We will present you our discoveries over the next few weeks.
Our first accommodation was in the region of Sainte-Rose, in the north of Basse-Terre, near the Grand-Cul-de-Sac marin. There is a lot of rain on Basse-Terre which results in lush and bright green forests. After several months of Canadian winter, what a pleasure to finally see some green! Fortunately, the showers, sometimes intense, are short-lived. It is this kind of showers that greeted us when we arrived at the Deshaies Botanical Garden; a big shower that we observed under the protection of a roof. Subsequently, this allowed us to take nice photos with drops of water on the plants!
The Deshaies Botanical Garden is very well laid out and offers a great introduction to the plants and flowers that we will see throughout our stay on Basse-Terre.

A profusion of brilliant colours. Amazing.
Thanks Jacqui. It was indeed and so welcome after the winter where everything is black and white…
It’s still dull and grey. Hoping that changes soon.
Same here though I have a few of my bulbs that are blooming…so a bit of colours.
What a great getaway… such lushness after the starkness of winter must have been a balm!
Thanks Eliza. Totally right. As soon as we got off the plane it was like reliving again. We do miss the green and summer colours during the winter.
How lucky for us that you are traveling again! I look forward to more beautiful photos. These are stunning!
Thanks for your note. I am glad you have enjoyed this first post. Certainly hope you will enjoy the rest of the series. We are making very slow progress on our photos so it might be stretched on a few weeks…
All those pinks and reds! So beautiful.
Thanks Anabel. It was indeed beautiful. A very nice garden.
I love the brilliant colors! Some of the plants you include in this post happen to be among my favorites — Heliconias are just too pretty. As for Ixoras, I used to have one that bloomed profusely, but at one point it got a really bad mealy bugs infestation and eventually died. Your photo of this plant makes me wonder… maybe I should get another one.
Thanks Bama for your note. I also love heliconias but obviously they don’t grow in Montreal (only in greenhouses) so it was great to see some many different varieties. You definitively should get another Ixora…they are beautiful.
Lucky to be away, Suzanne and Pierre, and your photos are wonderful. What a gift to have a rain shower to enhance your close-ups of the plants. All very beautiful! 🙂
Thanks Jane. It was indeed a very nice garden and rain can often be a photographer’s friend! Glad you enjoyed this series. More to come from our trip to Guadeloupe. It felt good to be travelling again and be in a different environment.
Beautiful Botanical garden! The parrots are cute. Well shared with colourful photos . Thanks 😊👍
Thanks Priti. We loved the parrots though they were in cages not in nature. The flowers were beautiful.
