The day started very early, at 6:30 am, to go towards the Colca canyon and see the condors. After a few stops along the way to admire the landscape, we arrived at the belvedere from where we can see these huge birds flying gracefully without flapping their wings. We were lucky and got to see several condors, and even some very close. Unfortunately we were unable to take photos of the condors but we will have wonderful memories of having spent an hour watching them. The views of the canyon are also impressive, despite the fact that they were backlit. After the canyon, we took the bus back to Puno, our next stop.

What a landscape! Shame you didn’t get any images of the condors…even a distant one. Somewhere I have a distant view of vultures at La Rhun in northern Spain…quite something to watch as they wheeled around overhead. We had gone with friends to ride on the rack railway, and the views were stunning
Thanks Sue. We didn’t take our big cameras on this trip and the phone didn’t allow us to take good pictures so we spent the time watching the birds instead of taking pictures. It was fascinating.
Aaah, fair enough!
The landscape here is amazing. Sometimes you just have to enjoy nature in the moment as you did with the condors. I am sure they were interesting to watch.
Thanks Jacqui. Glad you enjoyed this series. It was indeed very spectacular though it was too bad that the sun was facing us…As for the condors, I totally agree with you. It was much nicer to just watch them floating in the air in front of us. If I want pictures of condors I can find millions on Google and ours wouldn’t have been very good as there isn’t a good zoom on the phone.
Particularly love the view down into the valley with all the terraces and the low wispy clouds. It must have been wonderful to watch the condors.
Thanks Anabel. Yes, it was; condors are magnificent birds and we saw quite a few of them and some were very close to the lookout. Glad you enjoyed this series.
I was in Arequipa 4 years ago but instead of going to Colca Canyon I decided to visit a large Preserve for birds on the coast side of Arequipa. it’s a great size “Humedal” facing the Pacific Ocean. Great photos and good info. Thank you, 🙂
Thanks for your note. I am not surprised that you decided to visit a bird sanctuary as you always have wonderful photos of birds. Colca was very nice; as much the canyon than the chance to see condors. Glad you are still enjoying our series on Peru.
I love the sharp sunlight and the wisps of mist on the sunny landscape.
Thanks for your note. The sun was indeed quite sharp and the mist was also mixed with smoke from a few fires in the fields. It was a very lovely place.
