Pendant la nuit, notre navire a navigué de Carcass Island vers la capitale des Îles Malouines, Port Stanley ou Stanley. Une capitale qui compte autour de 2,500 habitants sur une population totale des îles d’environ 3,600. Notre journée a commencé tôt car nous voulions voir le navire entrer dans le port de Stanley (vers 6h30) par un étroit passage avant de se rendre à un quai flottant supposément temporaire mais tout rouillé… Nous avons pris la navette pour nous rendre au centre-ville pour visiter un petit musée très intéressant sur l’histore des îles et ensuite nous joindre à une visite guidée offerte par une habitante de la ville. Stanley est une jolie petite ville avec ses édifices à l’architecture d’influence britannique. Elle est aussi très colorée et constamment balayée par le vent.
During the night, our ship sailed from Carcass Island to the capital of the Falkland Islands, Port Stanley or Stanley. A capital that has around 2,500 inhabitants out of a total population of the islands of around 3,600. Our day started early as we wanted to see the ship enter Stanley Harbour (around 6:30am) through a narrow passage before heading to a supposedly temporary but rusty floating dock… We took the shuttle to downtown to visit a very interesting little museum on the history of the islands and then join a guided tour offered by a resident of the city. Stanley is a pretty little town with its buildings of British-influenced architecture. It is also very colourful and constantly swept by wind.

What was the draw to migrate to this harsh landscape? Whaling? Perhaps Scots after the Uprising?
Hi Eliza. Good question. I think it is a bit of all of the reasons you give as well as incitation from the British government so that they could claim the territory as being occupied by Britain against the claims of ownership by Argentina. What is also a bit of mystery to me is that they are people who even today are migrating to the Falklands. The last census found 18 different nationalities living on the islands. So I guess people do like the remoteness and harshness of these islands.
C’est intéressant ce mélange anglais, écossais aussi dans les premiers paysages et très coloré comme le sont souvent les îles du nord, sans doute pour compenser le côté un peu triste de leur état naturel. Merci du partage.

It looks much nicer than I expected. Of course, my knowledge stems from the (appalling) war being in the news relentlessly when i expect it did not look so pretty.
Thanks Anabel. We didn’t know much about the Falklands War apart from knowing it had existed. The little museum in town provided some very good info on the war and it was very interesting to learn about it (though wars are never fun!). The city is quite lovely though the wind was very strong…
