Le vent fut une présence constante durant notre séjour aux Îles Malouines; des vents assez forts pour décoiffer et rendre les randonnées parfois difficiles. Nous avons quand même décidé de nous joindre à une randonnée guidée de 5,5km sur une des pointes du Narrows jusqu’à la plage de Gipsy Cove. Les deux guides étaient très intéressantes et nous avons beaucoup appris sur la végétation et les animaux qui habitent l’endroit. La plage de sable blanc de Gipsy Cove n’avait rien à envier à celles que nous avions visité en Australie, quoique ici l’eau n’est jamais assez chaude pour se baigner. On y retrouve une colonie de manchots de Magellan.
The wind was a constant presence during our stay in the Falkland Islands; winds strong enough to blow your hair off and make hiking sometimes difficult. We still decided to join a 5.5km guided hike on one of the points of the Narrows to the beach of Gipsy Cove. The two guides were very interesting and we learned a lot about the vegetation and the animals that inhabit the place. The white sand beach of Gipsy Cove had nothing to envy to the beaches we had visited in Australia, although here the water is never warm enough for swimming. You can observe a colony of Magellanic penguins.

J’aime beaucoup ces paysages assez désertiques où la nature arrive quand même à sortir quelques fleurs pour donner de la couleur. C’est certainement des îles que j’aimerais visiter si je voyageais encore pour sortir des classiques destinations trop fréquentées. Merci pour cette série.
Merci Marie. Effectivement, c’est un endroit en dehors des chemins battus. La majorité des touristes arrivent en croisière et ne reste pas très longtemps. C’est un très bel endroit et nous sommes bien heureux d’avoir pu le visiter même si c’était un peu rapide.

Thanks for your note Maggie. We had never done a cruise before but we were quite pleased with the one we picked. Some of these expedition cruises have very interesting destinations and the ship was small (less than 200 passengers). If I had to do another cruise, I would go on another one like this one. I would certainly recommend a cruise in Antarctica.
Wildly beautiful… it must have been cool to see penguins hanging out at the beach!

Thanks for your note. Penguins are adorables. We have also seen penguins in NZ and Australia but they are of different species. On the pictures in this post, you have Magellanic penguins that are only found in the Falklands and Patagonia.
The terrain even looks cold! Great photos. I think my personal favourite is the kelp goose. Still in a wind storm.
